The Frugality of Newborn Cloth Diapering

A little while ago I came across a great newborn cloth diaper rental program and I remember thinking that I wanted to try it for the next Baby Stevens.  Well, little did I know I wouldn't have to wait that long to try it out!

It is offered through a cloth diaper/natural parenting store from North Carolina called Sweetbottoms Baby Boutique.  They have locations in Raleigh and Fayetteville, but the best part about them is they have an online store too and all those orders ship for free within the USA!!  So that means I don't have to be local to enjoy their store.

Anyway, the rental program is pretty awesome because they will send you 24 organic cotton, fitted newborn diapers that fit your baby from 1 to 3 months.  The program costs $215 BUT once you return the diapers at the end of the three month rental period, you get either a $100 store credit  or $90 refund!  So if you opt for the store credit, you can diaper your newborn for only $38.33 a month for the first three months.  A box of 88 Pamper's Newborn Size diapers costs $30 on Amazon just as a comparison and an average number of diapers a newborn goes through a day is 10 (usually a lot more), so the disposables would last you about 8 days.  That turns out to be about $112.50 per month for a total of $337.50 for three months of Pamper's!

The store also does a rewards point system that you can collect to earn discounts.  If you got this rental program, for example, you would be rewarded 215 points automatically and at 200 points you already qualify for a $10 discount on your next purchase!  You can also save up your points in order to receive even bigger discounts.

I love the idea of saving tons of money by not buying disposables and I also love the idea of BS2 having soft, organic cotton next to his/her bum from Day 1.

Of course you could always purchase newborn cloth diapers, but they are pretty pricey and the baby only fits in them for an average of three months.  Rumparooz Lil Joeys are some of the best reviewed newborn cloth diapers, but a pack of two costs $30!  While they are adorable, I just can't see myself paying that kind of money for diapers that Baby will use for such a short time because for 24 it'd be $360!  With the rental program, once Baby outgrows the newborn diapers, he/she will fit into Abby's stash of bigger cloth diapers so we won't have to spend any more money on diapering.  Add in the fact that we use cloth wipes so there is no extra cost there, and we very literally will be able to cloth diaper BS2 for $38.33/month for first three months and that's it!

Anyway, this isn't an official review or anything, I just wanted to let some of my Mommy friends know about the newborn cloth diaper rental program because it is really a great deal!!

And a picture of Abby playing dress up just for fun:
