Everything looked good at the NST and AFI today and then I headed over to my appointment with the midwife. I explained to her that I was hoping I could put off the induction and why and she said she understood my stance completely especially because my blood pressures have been so good for so long. She also said I didn't have to go in to the induction at all, as it is ultimately my choice, but she said she wanted to ask the MFM doctor on call what his/her advice was just so I could be fully advised by everyone on the medical team.
The MFM doctor that was on call was the doctor we had for both of Shane's growth ultrasounds, so she knew my situation well and she said that while she understands why I wouldn't want to go through an induction, she still recommends it if he doesn't come naturally because there still is a chance of an emergency situation if my blood pressure spikes out nowhere. In some women who have a few high blood pressure readings, their BPs can go back to being normal and then all of a sudden jump up to dangerous levels, and that could cause serious problems for both Shane and I and it could end up in an emergency C-section. She also mentioned that they usually induce moms with hypertension at 38 to 39 weeks, so they have already pushed back the induction date longer than they usually do.
The midwife and I discussed some courses of action and we decided to sweep my membranes in an effort to try to get things going naturally. There is a chance that this procedure can cause a release of oxytocin that kick-starts labor in some women. It wasn't the most comfortable procedure but it wasn't awful either, and if it could help start labor in a more natural way than pitocin, I am all for it.
Anyway, right now I am still on the books for the induction this Friday but my midwife said I could call that morning and tell them I want to wait and then just got in for a NST instead to monitor Shane.
If I decide to go through with the induction, I will definitely let everyone know. Until then: send natural labor vibes my way, PLEASE!!
